What is Adrenal Fatigue?

The adrenals are important glands that sit on top of each kidney. They produce many key hormones that influence everything from water balance to stress response to sexual health. Adrenal fatigue (also known as HPA axis dysfunction) is a collection of symptoms that results when the adrenal glands become unbalanced and produce either too much or too little hormone. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged physical or emotional stress, the most common symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep. Many people with adrenal fatigue also report feeling “wired” or anxious, despite being very tired. Sleep is often a problem as well, with early morning awakenings and non-refreshing sleep being the most common sleep-related issues reported by people with this condition. Many people also experience weight gain, brain fog, and worsening memory and concentration. Unfortunately, adrenal fatigue is not recognized as a medical condition by many physicians and patients often suffer for many years–or worse, are misdiagnosed with conditions like depression–prolonging their suffering.

How is Adrenal Fatigue Diagnosed?

A simple saliva test can determine if you have adrenal fatigue. At four defined times throughout the day, you simply collect your saliva into tubes in the test kit we provide you with. As with all WellnessScript tests, this test can be completed in the comfort of your home whenever it is convenient for you.

If I Have Adrenal Fatigue, How is it Treated?

Most types of adrenal fatigue can be treated with nutritional and herbal support. The herbs that are used for adrenal fatigue, called adaptogens, have been used for hundreds of years to help people manage stress, and are quite safe and effective. Rarely, prescription medications are needed to help severe adrenal fatigue. But the most important part of treatment is learning to manage stress and workload effectively. Your WellnessScript clinician will develop a personalized treatment plan including supplements, dietary recommendations, herbal medications and stress coping strategies. All of your recommended supplements and herbal medications will be packaged into convenient daily packets and delivered to your home. We use physician-grade supplements and only the highest quality herbs in our daily packets.

What Happens Next?

Recovering from adrenal fatigue is a journey, and we are here to help you every step of the way. People who are able to make lifestyle changes early on–such as decreasing caffeine use, actively managing stress and eating nutritiously–improve quicker than those who don’t participate in these changes. Most people will see improvements in their fatigue and sleep within the first few months of treatment and are fully recovered within 12-18 months. Your WellnessScript clinician may recommend repeat saliva testing 1-2 times per year to track your progress until you are better.
