What are Hormones?
Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. Your blood carries hormones to your organs and tissues to help control things like growth, metabolism, sexual function, reproduction and even mood.
What is a Hormone Imbalance?
As we age, our hormone production often shifts. This change can cause a shortage of hormones such as progesterone and estrogen in women experiencing menopause (or even the years leading up to menopause, known as perimenopause). Testosterone levels can drop in both men and women. Men begin to lose on average 1-2% of testosterone yearly starting in their 30’s. Male menopause is called andropause.
About 80% of patients with a hormone imbalance are women and 20% are men. Women may notice hormone imbalance symptoms starting in their 30’s or 40’s. For men, the symptoms generally appear in their late 40’s or early 50’s, but sometimes as early as their 20’s and 30’s.
Symptoms in women include:
- Night sweats or hot flashes
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex
- Fatigue or low energy
- Sleeping problems
- Brain fog — a confused or disorganized feeling
- Weight gain
- Changes in skin and hair
- Heart palpitations
In men, symptoms include:
- Low libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low or irritable mood
- Decrease in muscle strength
If I have a Hormone Imbalance, How is it Treated?
No matter what type of hormone imbalance you have, we can create a personalized approach to help. This often involves a prescription for compounded bioidentical hormones–bioidentical because the hormones are chemically very similar to the hormones your body produces. We can create customized doses and different forms of hormones (pills or creams, for example) just for you. Because bioidentical hormones are more natural and the lowest possible doses can be used, this option for hormone treatment is generally preferred by most holistic medicine clinicians.
We’ll also partner with you to make sure your lifestyle–nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress–are addressed and supported every step of the way. If you require supplements, those can be personalized for you as well (you only take what you need!). We carry only the highest quality, physician-grade supplements and package them into convenient daily packets. Best of all, your hormones and supplements are delivered right to your home!
What Happens Next?
You’ll likely notice an improvement in your symptoms within the first couple of weeks of taking your bioidentical hormones. Many women report improvement in energy, sleep, skin quality, sex drive, memory and mood. Men may notice improved energy, mood, strength and resolution of sexual issues. If you don’t notice improvement after a couple of months, we can reassess your response and adjust doses accordingly. Because the hormones are made specifically for you, there are many doses and options available. Additional lab monitoring is individualized, but is generally recommended 1-2 times per year. Nutritional testing is generally completed about every 6 months. You and your WellnessScript clinician can discuss how long you should continue on hormones–this is personalized too!
At WellnessScript, we believe every person is unique. We don’t practice “cookie cutter medicine”, striving instead to understand your specific needs and personalizing every step of your experience.
We bring together top holistic experts and make them easily available to help solve your health issues. Our clinicians have advanced training and years of experience in uncovering the root cause, unpacking and treating problems that traditional medicine fails to address.
We believe you shouldn’t go out of your way to address your concerns so everything we do–video appointments, lab testing, supplements and compounded medications–is easily available to you, right at home.
We believe that you shouldn’t feel alone when you’re dealing with a health problem. We’ll help you navigate the process, providing support, reminders, encouragement, and relevant information along the way.
Dr. Julie Briley, Functional & Naturopathic Medicine
About Dr. Julie Briley
As a naturopathic doctor, I am dedicated to helping you reach your health and wellness goals by identifying the underlying causes of your symptoms or conditions. We will work together to find the best approach to support your body’s natural healing process. As an expert in holistic health care, I blend the best of modern science with traditional natural medicine to help you optimize your diet, lifestyle, energy, sleep, mood, digestion, and hormones, so you feel great every day.
Following the naturopathic principle of “doctor as teacher”, I strongly believe that one of the most effective tools I provide is education. Understanding your body’s physiology and natural response when things are out of balance is empowering, and an essential part of reaching optimal health.
My longstanding interest in natural medicine and health education was first sparked when I served as an Environmental Education Specialist for the Peace Corps in Paraguay. That interest deepened when I returned to the U.S. to have my first child and struggled to find a medical provider that could provide compassionate, holistic health care for my family. I believe that everyone should have access to the health care approach they desire, and thus, becoming a naturopathic doctor not only combined my interests and experiences, but has allowed me to help fill a gap in the health care field.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM). In addition to my clinical practice, focused on addressing hormonal imbalances and digestive disorders, I co-founded the Food as Medicine Institute at NUNM, which provides community-based nutrition and cooking education for underserved populations. I also co-authored the book, Food As Medicine Everyday: Reclaim Your Health With Whole Foods, which is a practical nutrition guide to help shift your diet from processed foods to whole foods.
I look forward to hearing your story and getting started on your wellness journey, together.

Happy & Healthy Patients
I don’t think I’ve ever had better medical care in my life. I have been working with Dr. Julie Briley for about 6 months and she is so patient, thorough, and a critical thinker. To her, I am not just a thyroid issue, but a whole body! Not once did I ever feel like I was being rushed. Dr. Briley took as much time as I needed to answer all of my questions. She is super great at explaining how things work and why she thinks we should do certain treatments.
I have had the privilege of meeting Dr. Julie Briley and now my husband, family and a few friends are seeing her now too. I am finally feeling better and I see a light at the end of the tunnel. I was dealing with menopause symptoms and only feeling worse as time went by, but getting no relief from my usual doctor. I brought my recent tests results to Dr. Julie. She looked them over and immediately realized some of the issues I was having and why. She did a full hormone test, full lipid panel, food sensitivity and a test of my neurotransmitters. I feel that she finally has me on the right track. She is personally interested in my well-being and getting me to a happier, healthier place. I’m grateful I found her. As good as mainstream doctors can be, sometimes we must dig deeper to solve health issues. I prefer to do it the healthiest way I can. I don’t believe in taking drugs that cause more harm than good. Taking a holistic approach will yield excellent results.
